I found out I was pregnant with Allie in the end of October. My pregnancy was normal. I did have some preterm labor with her but all in all it was normal. It was on May 12th of 2002 when my step niece was killed in a horrible car accident. Two short weeks from that day and almost the
same time Allie's daddy (my husband) was seriously hurt in a work accident. and he was serverly burned, He had to be life flighted to West Penn burn center in Pittsburgh. He was let out on the 30th of May and our sweet Allie was born on the 31. The labor was uncomplicated. I was put in at 7 am. the induction began around 9 am. Allie was born at 5:15 in the afternoon. She looked healthy, and seemed to have no problems. It wasn't until her two week check-up at her PCP that we learned of her possible Cystic Fibrosis. Our doctor told us how they checked it with the heel prick, and if the levels of the IRT were up then they did a sweat test. Well he thought at the time that there was nothing wrong with Allie. He said her chances of have CF were 5%. Even though to this point she had lost 1 1/2 pounds and was already eating 6 ounces of formula every three hours. So we went to Childrens Hospital in Pittsburg for a sweat test two different times and both times they couldn't get her to sweat enough. So after talking to our doctor, he called out to Pittsburg and talked to a CF dr. they had us come out the very next day. They looked at her and talked to us and knew she had CF. So they did a DNA test and a feces test on her poop to check for the fat content of it. Well that was was the end of June and on July 17th we were told our precious baby girl had a life shortening genetic disease Cystic Fibrosis. Allie continued with her treatment at Childrens in Pittsburg till she was almost two. We then changed to Hershey Medical Center where she is now treated by a wonderful staff, Dr. Graff and Nurse Missy. Just a few days after our first visit there Allie had to have a scope procedure done there to check out her lungs and to check the mugus in her lungs to see if they were growing PA. Then six months later Allie had a G-Tube put in because of her poor weight gain and poor eating.
